Annually, the University of Iowa partners with Johnson County Social Services to provide tax free preparation assistance for low to moderate income Johnson County resident through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance(VITA) Program. VITA is a national IRS sponsered program that helps taxpayers receive maximum federal and state refunds at no cost to the taxpayer.

Our volunteers provide free tax help, preparation, and filing. We offer electronic filing, so that taxpayers can receive their tax refunds quickly.

Important Update: Changes in Operations at our VITA Sites in Johnson County

We’re excited to share some updates regarding the operations at our VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) sites in Johnson County. To enhance our services and better cater to our clients’ needs, we are implementing a change in operations.

University of Iowa Site: Personalized Client Contact

At our University of Iowa site, we will be reaching out directly to clients we are planning to work with. This personalized approach allows us to streamline the process and ensure efficient assistance to those we have identified. It also helps us provide a better learning experience for our volunteers, who are all accounting majors at the University of Iowa Tippie College of Business. Our volunteers are certified by the IRS in preparing returns.

Johnson County Site: Open Clinic

For those not contacted directly, we welcome you to attend the open tax clinics at the Johnson County site. The open clinic provides an opportunity for individuals to receive assistance and guidance with their tax-related queries. Their dedicated team will be available to address your needs during the clinic hours. Their volunteers are members of the Johnson County community and are all certified by
the IRS in preparing returns.
