PROGRAM Details

Our courses are designed for both seasoned project managers and professionals seeking more formal techniques for contemporary project management. These non-credit bearing courses award Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and PMI Professional Development Units (PDUs). They are open to anyone who seeks effective techniques for project management – no application required. Students can take individual courses to develop specific areas of interest or pursue the Project Management Certificate.

Project Management CERTIFICATE

The University of Iowa's Project Management Certificate is a series of courses that provide a comprehensive foundation of project management skills and prepare participants for the PMP and CAPM exams.

The Project Management Certificate requires three core courses and electives totaling four or more class days.

Project Management Fundamentals

Successful projects require effective management of scope, schedule, and cost. This course covers key knowledge areas within the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) and introduces contemporary project management techniques and principles. You'll learn methods for planning and executing projects through team exercises, case analysis, and hands-on experience with project planning software.

Project initiation and planning

A vision, delivery strategy, and action plan are fundamental to successful projects. In this course, you'll learn to develop a project charter, assess project feasibility, and select a project delivery strategy. The course will also provide practical tools such as preparing management plans for communication, stakeholders, quality, and procurement. This course is based on the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide).

LEADING PROJECT TEAMS

Effective teams are fundamental to successful projects. This course focuses on team member roles and responsibilities in the context of project management. The course covers teambuilding, dealing with team dysfunctions, and communicating effectively. It also provides tools for meeting management that help maximize team performance. You can expect to learn practical information you can apply immediately. This course is based on the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide).

COMMUNICATION, NEGOTIATION & INFLUENCE

Communication is a key knowledge area in the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide). Project managers must use complex skills to gain commitment, obtain resources, and garner organizational support, typically without direct authority over their required resources. This course is designed to help project managers accomplish these goals by effectively communicating with and influencing others.

MANAGING THE MULTI-PROJECT PIPELINE

This workshop presents organizational frameworks, tools, and techniques to properly maximize productivity across multiple projects. Concepts including Phase Gate Project Management, critical chain, operational disruption, and Little's Law are introduced to help participants assemble the right multi-project management best practices for their organization.

INTRODUCTION TO AGILE

Agile is a project management framework that focuses on producing high quality work in fast-paced, uncertain project environments. This workshop introduces participants to strategies for implementing Agile project management and the infrastructure needed to support the Agile Project Management Organization.

PMP AND CAPM EXAM PREP COURSE

Project Management Professional (PMP®) certification is the gold standard in project management, assuring companies that a project manager has the skills, knowledge, and best practices to succeed. Similarly, the Certified Associate in Project Management certification (CAPM®) is gaining in professional status. This course reviews the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide), covers key areas in the PMP and CAPM exams, and provides useful test-taking tips.
