Rethinking the Design of Presentation Slides Add to your Outlook Calendar

Tippie MBAs,

You are invited to a unique opportunity to hone your research communications skills. Please plan to attend an interactive lecture presented by TED speaker Melissa Marshall, Rethinking the Design of Presentation Slides on Friday, April 18, 10:30 a.m. noon, in Shambaugh Auditorium at the Main Library.

This lecture asks participants to rethink the design of presentation slides in science and engineering and challenge the common and conventional bulleted slide structure. Marshall will propose the use of an assertion-evidence slide design approach that is proven to make technical presentations more understandable, memorable, and persuasive. Participants will learn about the theory behind the structure and how to apply it to their own presentations using a series of exercises and critiques.

A senior lecturer with the Department of Communication Arts & Sciences at Penn State University, Marshall is a crusader against bullet points and an evangelist for effective slide design in scientific presentations. She believes that the future depends on the innovations of scientists and engineers, and is passionate about helping them effectively tell the story of their work. She specializes in teaching speaking skills to engineering students and has also lectured at Harvard Medical School, the New York Academy of Sciences, Cornell University, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Sponsored by the College of Engineering, IIHRHydroscience & Engineering, and the Office of the VP for Research & Economic Development.
