Graduate Financial Management Association (GFMA)


To provide opportunities for all Tippie MBA students to enrich their graduate studies and professional development as it relates to financial management


The GFMA strives to be known as the student organization that serves as the connection between academia and the finance profession. We seek to accomplish this by exposing Tippie MBA Students to finance professionals and career paths by organizing networking and educational events on and away from campus.

Goals/Strategic Plan

The Tippie School of Management GFMA seeks to achieve its mission by providing members with opportunities for professional development and community engagement, while acting as an advocate for students.

The organization hosts two trips a year; these trips are an opportunity to visit companies and network with alumni.


Alec Davis - President

Academy/track: Finance / Corporate Finance
Undergraduate institution: Northwestern University, Engineering
Prior career: R&D Engineer
Why this student org and position? I want to contribute towards maintaining Tippie's strong finance reputation and providing opportunities for financial learning and engagement with the student body and community.
Interests: I enjoy cooking, traveling, running/cycling and small business/entreneurship.

Stuart Hemesath - Vice President

Academy/track: Finance / Investment Management
Undergraduate institution:
University of Iowa, Finance
Prior career: Underwriting and Compliance Manager at Wells Fargo
Why this student org and position? Tippie’s MBA accolades in finance brought me back to the University of Iowa. I took this leadership role to build on those successes and give back to the program during my time here.
Interests: Investing, traveling and Hawkeye sports. I am also an avid home brewer and compete in regional competitions.  

Bernardo Daza - Vice President of Treasury

Academy/track: Finance / Corporate Finance
Undergraduate institution: Universidad Católica Boliviana /  IE Business School
Prior career: Operations & Logistics Engineer / Business Development Manager
Why this student org and position? The goal is to work for the GFMA students and other MBA student associations to make the most of every networking and professional experience that we organize. Also, to responsibly manage the GFMA funds for all the activities during our term.
Interests: Sports, travelling. financial news and analysis, spending time with family and friends

Annual Fall & Spring Trips

In recent years, GFMA has visited companies in Chicago, Minneapolis, and St. Louis. The destination for spring 2014 is Kansas City. Some of the most recent companies we have visited include: United Airlines, ADM Investor Services, US Bank, Best Buy, Wells Fargo, Monsanto, Chicago Mercantile Exchange, Rawlings, and Capital Innovators.


Guest Speakers

The finance academy has brought in speakers this past semester from the State of Wisconsin Investment Board, Sprint, Concordant Partners, and U of Iowa Foundation, among others. Students have many opportunities to network with these individuals, as well as other finance professionals.


I3 Forum

This past fall the theme of the I3 forum, which brings all academies together for a day of learning, was Networking. Speakers included:
Hilding Branzell, Finance Manager, Proctor & Gamble
Jana Michael, Director of Development, University of Iowa
Porter Gale, author of “Your Network is Your Net Worth” and former Vice President of Marketing for Virgin America


Other Activities

This spring we will bring back the stock competition! We will incorporate this with our involvement with KIVA, an online lending platform.
