Senior Manager of Shopper Marketing, Johnson & Johnson
Where am I?
That was the first thought Gonca had when she stepped off the plane in Cedar Rapids with two suitcases and a backpack to her name. She traveled from her home in Istanbul, Turkey to pursue her dream of an MBA with a sense of adventure and determination.
Gonca came to Tippie with a political science undergraduate degree and is quick to admit she had a lot to learn about marketing. And in typical Gonca style, she met the challenge head on through her hard work and immersion in the Tippie culture.
Gonca advises MBA students to “take control of your own career, because you are in charge of developing yourself and only you can do the best job.” Gonca’s approach paid off when she was hired by Philip Morris as a Territory Sales Manager.
After developing her knowledge of category management and pricing strategies, she joined Catalina Marketing where she was promoted to Director of Business Development. She said her experience in this position taught her to “balance what your customer wants to do, meet brand objectives with targeted marketing solutions, and meet your own company’s revenue goals.”
Gonca currently holds the new position of Senior Manager of Shopper Marketing at Johnson & Johnson, a Fortune 50 company. She’s built her role from the ground up and her impact has already led to the development of an expanded team of shopper marketers.
Gonca Paul proves that taking a risk has rewards for those who are willing to approach opportunities with an open mind and drive to be the best. She says that her time as an MBA at Tippie played a large part in her successful career.
“To me, it was one of the best experiences I’ve had to prepare myself not just for my career, but for life in general.”
