BBA 1976 (Accounting)
President, M.J. Smith and Associates, Englewood, Colorado
Mark J. Smith, BBA76, has been named one of the top independent financial advisors in America by Barron's and the top-ranked financial advisor in Colorado (third in the United States) by Raymond James Financial Services Inc. But the most important moniker to him is when Registered Rep. magazine dubbed him "The Educator."
"I wasn't selling products or services, but helping investors understand the issues surrounding building portfolios, managing wealth, and reducing taxes," says Smith, president of M.J. Smith and Associates, a wealth management firm in Denver, which manages more than $550 million for its clients. "My business actually developed as a result of offering educational financial workshops in the Denver area. That helped build my client base," he says.
In 2001, he established the Mark Smith Business Scholarship in the Tippie College. The $2,500 annual scholarship is given to an undergraduate Tippie student, based on academic merit and financial need.
"I'm trying to help kids who may be from disadvantaged backgrounds like I had. Knowing I've helped them afford college really makes me feel good," he says.
