International Program in the United Arab Emirates

Tentative Travel Dates: January 4-12, 2013

The UAE GLO will include a combined trip to Dubai—a global city and an international financial center—and to Abu Dhabi, the capital and second-largest city of the UAE. The majority of the trip will be spent in Dubai, a thriving city with industry segments in oil and gas, financial services (sometimes Dubai is referred to as the City of Gold), real estate, and others.

6N:235 EXA or 001 Seminar in International Business: Going & Growing Global in the UAE

This 3 s.h. Fall 2012 course can be used as an elective or as a substitute for 6N:235 Global Business Strategy, a required core course, for MBA-PM students.

Dates: The predeparture class session and orientation will be held in Iowa City on Sunday, December 2, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Attendance is required at the predeparture class session/orientation in Iowa City; the other class sessions will be held abroad. 

Program Dates in UAE:  January 5-12

Program Fee: $2,600

The program fee includes:

  • 7 nights hotel accommodations (double occupancy with classmate)*
  • Breakfasts and a few other meals (welcome and farewell meals plus several others)
  • Orientation program and lunch in Iowa City
  • Transportation from airport to hotel, and from hotel to airport in global location (two transfer times will be selected for arrival and departure, TBD)
  • Arrangements and transportation to/from all professional visits and cultural excursions
  • Cultural excursion
  • Internal transportation (such as round-trip transportation from Dubai to Abu Dhabi)
  • Classroom facilities in global location
  • Supplemental health insurance

*A single room supplement of $600 will be charged for those individuals who want a single room.

The nonrefundable program fee will be billed on your November 1, 2012, U-bill.

Tuition:
MBA-PM Students:
$1,800 for the 3-credit-hour course (billed on your December  1, 2012, U-bill)
Full-time MBA Students: Assessed as part of the 2011 fall semester tuition

Airfare (on your own):
Airfare from the United States to the site country is arranged individually and NOT included in the program fee. Estimated airfare is $1,500+. Please do not book your airfare until your application has been accepted and your participation confirmed.

Other Expenses (on your own):
Course packet/materials, remaining meals, entertainment

  • Visa and Entry Fees—Non-U.S. Citizens:
    • Non-U.S. citizens will need to check for any fees or visa requirements required for their respective countries.
    • These costs are not included in the program fee.
    • When needed, an official University of Iowa letter of intent can be provided.

Financial Aid:

  • Admitted students who are eligible for financial aid can receive aid (loans) for the following costs associated with this program:
    • tuition;
    • program fees; and
    • travel
  • If you plan to seek financial aid through the University of Iowa's Office of Student Financial Aid, you MUST notify Colleen Downie.

The program fee is subsidized by the Global Tuition Surcharge for Full-time MBA students.

Professional Visit/Tour Topics (Tentative Itinerary—subject to change):

  • Details to come; industries will include banking and finance, government, manufacturing, transportation and trade. Companies visited will be a mix of multinationals and local firms.

Registration for GLO courses continues in EMBARC for MBA-PM students through October 10, 2012.

  • Admitted students
    To receive GLO registration priority consideration, your GLO request must be received by midnight on October 10, 2012.  Priority will be based on the number of completed courses through Fall 2012 (including Intersession) and the date/time of the registration request. An admitted student registration request received after midnight on October 10 will be processed in the order in which it is received. Admitted students who have a seat in a GLO course will see their status change from “Requested” to “Space Held’ in EMBARC on October 10, 2012.
  • Pre-MBA students
    Your registration request will be prioritized based on the date/time of your request. Your request will be processed after admitted students have made their request and only if space is still available.

In addition to your registration request, you will also be required to complete a GLO application. Application information has been forwarded by email.
