Meet Our Faculty

Mick Mount

What are your research areas? I investigate how individual differences among people (especially personality traits) at work influence their job attitudes, job performance, and career outcomes.

Did you work in industry before teaching? I worked for a large computer manufacturer in Minneapolis before coming to the University of Iowa. My first job was in human resources research, where I conducted test validation studies for employee selection, developed employee attitude surveys and performance management programs, and evaluated training programs. The second job was in executive development, where I worked to improve the effectiveness of executive teams. This job involved 75% travel worldwide (which was exciting for a few years but left little time for a personal life).

What do you love most about the University of Iowa or living in Iowa? The people—as we say in our courses: "The people make the place."

What are your hobbies or what do you like to do on weekends? I am an avid golfer in the summer and a racquetball player in the winter (knees permitting).

Do you have children? I have a daughter who is graduating from college this year.

Do you have pets? My wife, Marti, and I travel a lot so we decided against having pets, though we may change our mind soon.

What are some of your favorite movies? Apollo 13.

Where were you born? Where have you lived besides Iowa? I was born in Des Moines, grew up in Marshalltown, and lived in Minneapolis for five years after I received my Ph.D.
