Sara Rynes

What are your research areas?
I do research in the areas of recruitment, compensation, evidence-based management, management education, and the academic-practice gap.

Did you work in industry before teaching? I worked in the Social Security Disability Administration before returning to graduate school.
I determined whether or not claimants met the criteria for disability benefits. I learned a lot about medical diagnoses during that time, an interest that has stuck with me.

What do you love most about the University of Iowa or living in Iowa? My husband and I have both been really surprised by how much we have come to love the University of Iowa and Iowa City. Everyone is so collegial in the university and the College of Business. Our students are supportive of one another, and many do volunteer activities on top of their busy education schedules. Iowa City has great restaurants, terrific theater, and excellent music. The local schools are great; students win many awards and go to the top universities. The community is very prosocial; there are lots of unique local businesses, nonprofits, charitable events. The Iowa Writers' Workshop, Prairie Lights Bookstore, the Iowa City Public Library, and the fact that Iowa City is a UNESCO City of Literature all make this a writer’s and reader’s paradise. Nearly every summer weekend is marked by some artistic, musical, cultural, or food-related event. We just love it here!

What are your hobbies or what do you like to do on weekends? I love to read. I also like traveling, gardening, hiking, walking my dogs, yoga, and spending time with my family.

Do you have children? Yes, I have two of my own children, Jennifer and Daniel, as well as a stepson, Ben. Jennifer and her husband live in Cedar Rapids and have three boys. Daniel lives in Torun, Poland, and Ben lives in Oxford, England.

Do you have pets? Yes, we love our pets! Currently, we have two rescue "mutts," Cleo and Elvis, and a 16-year-old cat, Fluffy. Cleo is a great big sister to Elvis, who lives up to his "naughty boy" name.

What are some of your favorite books? Into Thin Air (Jon Krakauer), Without Reservations (Alice Steinbach), The Unbearable Lightness of Being (Milan Kundera), American Pastoral (Philip Roth), Possession (A.S. Byatt), Angle of Repose (Wallace Stegner), Home (Marilynne Robinson), Out of This World (Mary Swander), and Wild and Tiny Beautiful Things (Cheryl Strayed).

What are some of your favorite movies? Atonement, The Lives of Others, Remains of the Day, Citizen Kane, and a Masterpiece Theatre series, The Jewel in the Crown. I will also admit to loving the guilty pleasures of "lighter" movies such as Bridget Jones' Diary, The Big Lebowski, Summer of '42, Office Space, and Masterpiece Theatre's Downton Abbey.

Where were you born? Where have you lived besides Iowa? I was born in Algoma, Wis., 20 miles south of Door County and 30 miles east of Green Bay. It’s right on Lake Michigan, which always felt like an ocean. Since then, I have lived in Madison, Wis; Minneapolis, Minn., and Ithaca, N.Y.

Countries visited? I didn’t even have a passport until I met my husband, who is English. But now I’ve been to Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica, England, Scotland, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Germany, Argentina, Ecuador, Australia, and China. I’d love to visit Turkey, Morocco, India, New Zealand, Botswana, South Africa, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Poland.
