Meet Our Faculty

Frank Schmidt

What are your research areas? Personnel selection, role of general intelligence and personality in work performance and life outcomes, research methods, meta-analysis, psychological measurement, individual differences in traits and abilities.

Did you work in industry before teaching? No, but I have had my own consulting business since 1970. I have earned and learned a lot from this. Every job is different. (I just finished one for ACT.) I also have a small software business, selling software that does meta-analysis. Customers are from all over the globe.

What do you love most about the University of Iowa or living in Iowa? The city of Iowa City. Everyone loves Iowa City and I am no exception.

What are your hobbies or what do you like to do on weekends? Bungee jumping, sky diving, and hang gliding. Also, I like to occasionally practice being a human cannon ball. (This is more fun than you might think.)

Do you have children? Three children, all adults, two daughters and one son. They have come to accept me as I am.

Do you have pets? A Springer Spaniel that is almost 14 but still acts like a puppy. I am trying to model myself after my dog.

What are some of your favorite books? Too many to list here. I read a lot, on a wide variety of subjects. Sometimes I even read while I am hang gliding.

Where were you born? Where have you lived besides Iowa? In Jeffersontown, Kentucky, which is near Louisville. Kentucky is a great place to grow up—the land of beautiful horses and fast women. I have also lived in Indiana (at Purdue), Michigan (professor at Michigan State) and Virginia (when I worked in D.C.).

Countries visited? Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Korea, Turkey, Greece, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Canada, Czech Republic, Virgin Islands, South Africa, Nevada, New York City, and Solon, Iowa. (I may have missed a few.)
