MIS Suggested Areas of Emphasis
The following are suggested emphasis areas for the courses you may complete in your MIS major. These may assist you in finding courses that may be of interest to you in pursuing a given course of study or to create talking points for discussing your program with recruiters.
A student majoring in MIS must select at least one elective but is encouraged to select as many as possible in order to be better prepared to work in the IT industry.
Systems Analysis and Development
This area will assist you in developing your abilities to design and build systems. You start with programming with VB and ASP.NET and database and then add the tools of system design and complete the area with a project course that integrates everything into an application project. This area is based principally on 6K:182, 6K:183 and programming courses. A suggested series of courses to complete this emphasis area might include:
- 6K:186 Advanced Database Methods
- 6K:189 E-Commerce Technology
- Another computer science programming course
The web design area is intended to start you out in the process of becoming a webmaster or a web designer. You have tools such as VB and ASP.Net that provide a scripting basis for accessing data from the web and then the Web & Multimedia course provides information about web design and preparing and creating images, animation, sound, and video files for the web. A suggested series of courses to complete this emphasis area might include:
Networks and Security
The required course in this area is an overview of the area of data and voice communications and presents topics such as protocols, simulation of network designs, various kinds of networks, and security issues. Upon that base you can build some skills in the security area and network design area. The Business Technology Association offers a certification course in Windows that also would be very helpful with this emphasis.
