Tippie College's Business Week Set for April 21-28

As a way to bring business students together and highlight their accomplishments, the University of Iowa Henry B. Tippie College of Business is celebrating Business Week April 21-28.

Undergraduate students in the college are presenting a series of social, educational, career, and community service events during the second annual Business Week. Faculty and staff are included in the activities.

Some events have an academic focus (a business case study competition) or career focus (mock interviews and resume workshops), while others combine a fun activity with a charitable cause (a dodge ball tournament and a cookie decorating contest). Students also will be encouraged to give back to their community during a weeklong food and clothing drive.

"It's a way to celebrate all the great things that have happened at the college this past year and encourage interaction among students, faculty, and staff in the college," said Amy Bartachek, assistant director of programming in the Tippie College Undergraduate Program Office.

Highlights of Business Week will include:

  • Food and Clothing Drive, April 21-28, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. outside W151 Pappajohn Business Building (PBB). Items will be donated to the Domestic Violence Intervention Program. The Business Student Ambassadors Organization and Elected Staff Council are sponsoring the drive.
  • Business Case Study Competition, April 21, 1:30 to 5 p.m. Partners from McGladrey and Pullen will introduce a business case to all teams and each will have two hours to work on a solution/recommendation for the case. Using PowerPoint, they will present their findings to the panel of judges. The Alpha Kappa Psi professional business fraternity and Beta Alpha Psi honorary accounting organization are orchestrating this event.
  • Dodge Ball Tournament, April 23, 2 to 5 p.m. at the UI Field House. Organized by Leadership Council and sponsored by Paul Revere's Pizza, proceeds from the event will go to the Ronald McDonald House.
  • Pearson Lecture Series, April 24, 10:30 a.m. in W10 PBB (Introduction to Marketing Strategies Class). Kathleen Dore will speak at this presentation sponsored by the Tippie College Undergraduate Program Office. Widely regarded as a leader and innovator in the cable industry, Dore was appointed in October 2004 to the newly created position of president, Television & Radio, CanWest MediaWorks Inc.

    Dore is responsible for all CanWest MediaWorks Inc. broadcast operations, including the Global Television Network and its affiliate stations across the country, cable channels, and radio stations.

    Prior to joining CanWest MediaWorks Inc., Dore was a 21-year veteran of New York-based Rainbow Media Holdings Inc., where she served as president of entertainment services, for U.S. cable networks AMC (American Movie Classics), IFC (Independent Film Channel), and WE (Women's Entertainment).

    At Rainbow, Dore was responsible for the development, launch, and success of the Independent Film Channel and IFC Entertainment, which distributed the award-winning independent films "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and "Boys Don't Cry." Dore was also responsible for the growth and expansion of Bravo, now owned by NBC, where she served as president from 1996 until 2002. At Bravo, she oversaw the development of the award-winning series "Inside the Actors Studio" and "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy."

    Dore earned an MBA in finance and a bachelor of arts in film and broadcasting from the UI, and is a member of the Tippie College Board of Visitors.

  • Economics Forum Debate, April 24, 7 to 9 p.m. in W401 PBB. The debate will focus on the economic effects of ethanol production.
  • Leadership Council Barbecue, April 25, 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the PBB Patio (rain location is Andersen Galleria and W401 PBB). Union Pacific is sponsoring the barbeque where students, faculty, and staff can enjoy a hamburger, chips, cookie, and drink for free.
  • Mock Interviews, April 25, 26, and 27 at the Pomerantz Career Center. Students can improve their interviewing skills during mock interviews with representatives from the Principal Financial Group, RuffaloCODY, AFLAC, and Primerica Financial Services.
  • Creating and Improving Your Resume, April 25, 12:10 to 1 p.m. in C310 Pomerantz Center. This session is designed to help students get started on a resume. They will begin a career self-analysis and see what distinguishes a "stellar" resume from an ordinary one.
  • Cookie Decorating Contest, April 25, 4 p.m. on the PBB Patio. Sponsored by Women in Business, cost for this event is $10 per team and proceeds will be donated to the Domestic Violence Intervention Program.
  • Breakfast with the Deans, April 25, 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. in room S326 PBB. Students can meet with Tippie College Dean Gary Fethke, Associate Dean of the Undergraduate Program Nancy Hauserman, and incoming Associate Dean of the Undergraduate Program Beth Ingram at this breakfast sponsored by the Undergraduate Program Office.
  • Interviewing Tips and Techniques, April 26, 2:40 to 3:30 p.m. in C310 Pomerantz Center. At this workshop, students can prepare for job interviews and learn how to answer behavior-based questions, develop a list of questions to ask an interviewer and get tips about phone and group interviews.
  • Reception Honoring Associate Dean Nancy Hauserman, April 26, 4 to 5 p.m. on the PBB patio (rain location is the Andersen Galleria). After seven years as associate dean of the Undergraduate Program, Hauserman is leaving the position and will return to the Management and Organizations faculty.
  • "What Not to Wear - Professional Business Attire", April 26, 4:30 p.m. in W151 PBB. The Business Student Ambassadors and Delta Sigma Pi will sponsor this Professional Business Attire Workshop.
  • Delta Sigma Pi Professional Speaker, April 26, 6:30 p.m. in C20 Pomerantz Center. Bob Crawford, founding partner, Crawford, Johnson, and Northcott Inc. Research and Analysis Firm, will speak at this presentation.
  • Commencement Ticket Distribution and Senior Class Gift Donations, April 25, 26 and 27, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. outside of W151 PBB.
  • Student Organization Banquet, April 27, 6 to 8 p.m. at the Iowa City Sheraton Hotel. Iowa football Coach Kirk Ferentz will be the keynote speaker at this event where outstanding organizations and student leaders are recognized. The Principal Financial Group is sponsoring the banquet.
  • Golf Outing, April 28, noon at the Pleasant Valley Golf Course; sponsored by the I-Envision Entrepreneurship organization and Delta Sigma Pi.
