Jim Draper Named 2006 MBA Alumni Mentor of the Year
A 1996 graduate of the Tippie MBA program, Draper is an active member of the Twin Cities Iowa Club alumni group. He has helped market the MBA programs to prospective students and provided a testimonial for the new Tippie Professional Portfolio publication.
Draper has formally mentored two students—Jim Doll and Chris Fultz—and informally mentored several other Tippie MBA students. As a mentor, he has made himself available to students who want to research his company, 3M, and those with an interest in marketing. He has spoken with students about numerous topics including current business issues, Tippie courses and internship or full-time job searches.
"Jim definitely deserves this award," said Fultz, a 2006 Tippie MBA graduate. "He is extremely helpful and available. His advice and feedback have provided clarity when I was unsure, which has given me added confidence in the actions that I have taken."
"Mentoring is a two-way street," said Doll, a 2004 Tippie MBA graduate. "Little value is added if only one person is trying to make the mentoring relationship work. Jim and I have both established a relationship that helps me and hopefully has been valuable to Jim as well. We talk over the phone regularly and he is willing and eager to share his advice based on the questions I have for him. There are times that he gives unique insight that I haven't thought of and that helps regardless of the topic: marketing, classes, the internship search, etcetera. These tidbits of advice have made a big difference."
The Mentor of the Year award was announced at the MBA Spring Banquet Honors Banquet in April. Draper will be formally honored at an event on Sept. 29.
The MBA Alumni Mentoring Program is designed to match incoming MBA students with alumni whose backgrounds and career interests are similar. The alumni then provide the students with advice regarding career direction, critique their résumés and provide general academic and professional insights.
The Tippie School of Management offers three MBA programs designed to enhance professional education: a Full-time MBA; the MBA for Professionals and Managers (MBA-PM) Program, which is offered predominately in the evenings for students in Des Moines, Newton, Cedar Rapids and the Quad Cities; and the Executive MBA, with programs in Iowa City and Des Moines. In addition, the Tippie School has expanded offerings over recent years by providing a Dual Master's Degree Program for engineers, in conjunction with Iowa State University and an International Executive MBA program in both Hong Kong and Beijing.
