In a column summarizing the backdating scandal so far, it's noted that a UNIVERSITY OF IOWA researcher who kicked off the scandal last year by pointing to possible backdating at a handful of companies has just announced new findings: Some 29 percent of 7,774 public companies he's examined -- a total of 2,270 -- are suspected of backdating. The newspaper is based in Florida. The column which originally appeared in the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, also appeared in the MYRTLE BEACH (S.C) SUN NEWS, the MACON (Ga.) TELEGRAPH, THE DULUTH NEWS TRIBUNE in Minnesota, and several other newspapers.
