UI Pomerantz Career Center Announces New Des Moines Center Internship Program

A new internship program offered by the University of Iowa's Pomerantz Career Center will help some UI students secure paid, professional semester-long internships with Des Moines-area businesses while attending classes at the Pappajohn Education Center in Des Moines.

Gerald Wickham, associate director of internships in the Pomerantz Career Center, said the new Des Moines Center Internship Program demonstrates the University of Iowa's commitment to providing an outstanding education for its students, offering service learning, and helping to keep young professionals in Iowa.

"This program has an intense focus on developing an affinity to the state of Iowa in future professionals," said Wickham. "Students will explore new directions in Iowa and make strong connections for their future. The creation of the Des Moines Center is a statement of commitment to the state of Iowa, and we are deeply committed to making this a win-win success for employers and our undergraduates."

The Des Moines Center Internship Program is open to sophomore, junior, and senior students from the Tippie College of Business, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the College of Engineering with a 2.5 grade-point average or higher. Students interested in participating must apply and will be selected following a competitive process.

Wickham said interns will live in Des Moines while taking an academic seminar and performing service-learning projects, earning a total of 12 credit hours. Interns will also receive professional mentoring, academic and career advising, participate in a class and attend a lecture series featuring expert speakers. He said each student's service-learning projects will provide outreach to local organizations. Employers from all sectors, including nonprofit, will host interns starting in spring semester 2007.

Wickham said Des Moines-area employers have expressed excitement about participating in the innovative program. Students will be placed in areas such as government, arts and culture, sport, biotech, health sciences, banking, insurance, media, graphics, software technology and more.
