UIAA Presents Personal Branding Talk Nov. 14 in Cedar Rapids

At a Nov. 14 presentation in the University of Iowa Alumni Association's Lifelong Learning Series, job seekers and professionals can learn about personal branding and how to market themselves to employers to get the jobs that they want. The event is co-sponsored by the Pomerantz Career Center.

The presentation will take place at 7 p.m. Nov. 14, at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art Auditorium, 401 Third Ave. SE in Cedar Rapids. Dave Collins, lecturer in the Department of Marketing at UI Tippie College of Business will define personal branding and how people can identify their brand identity and target market. He will also discuss how to build a personal brand, give some practical examples on how to communicate the brand, and how to evaluate it over time.

A brand is an identifying mark that shows a company's unique quality or a promise of value, setting it apart from its competition. Personal branding uses the same concepts, but applies them to an individual level. By clarifying and communicating what makes them different, a person can use personal branding to separate themselves from others and become successful in the professional world.

"Just like a company works to develop brand identity, people should think about the brand image they are building for themselves. To be successful professionally, you need to market your own personal brand," Collins said.

Much more than the creation of a mark, Collins says successful branding requires both thought and execution. "Consider the image that a strong, hard-working brand projects to employers, co-workers, and supervisors," he explains. "Personal branding is more than just marketing oneself to an employer, it's building a product deciding where one wants to work, what skills a person has and what his or her salary could be."

Collins has been recognized as Teacher of the Year by Tippie College undergraduate students and was named Student's Choice for Faculty Excellence. He has expertise in customer relationship management/direct marketing, integrated marketing communication strategies, marketing management and strategic planning, and development of marketing information systems.

A reception with light refreshments begins at 6 p.m. before the program. This event is free and open to the public, but participants are encouraged to RSVP by Nov. 10 to the UI Alumni Association online at https://www.iowalum.com/lifelonglearning/rsvp or by calling 800-469-2586.
