UI Accounting Programs Rank Highly In National Surveys

The undergraduate and graduate professional accounting programs at the University of Iowa's Tippie College of Business were ranked among the nation's best in new surveys by U.S. News & World Report and Public Accounting Report, an independent newsletter of the accounting profession.

According to Public Accounting Report's annual survey of accounting professors and department heads, Tippie's undergraduate professional accounting program ranked in 21st place. The graduate program was in a six-way tie for 28th place, and the Ph.D. program was ranked 13th, eighth best among public universities.

Public Accounting Report compiled its rankings through a survey of accounting professors, department heads and department chairs, who were asked to name the undergraduate and graduate programs that most consistently turn out students capable of someday attaining "partner" status. Public Accounting Report is one of the leading trade publications covering the public accounting profession in the United States.

Meanwhile, in the 2007 Edition of "America's Best Colleges," published by U.S.News & World Report, Iowa's undergraduate accounting program tied for 15th among public colleges and universities and tied for 21st among all colleges and universities. The graduate accounting program tied for 12th among public universities and tied for 24th overall.

U.S. News' undergraduate rankings are based on surveys of deans and senior faculty at business programs accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Graduate rankings are based on ratings by business school deans and directors of AACSB accredited master's degree programs. Participants in both surveys were asked to nominate programs for excellence in the area of accounting. Rankings were determined by the number of mentions a school received.

The Tippie College of Business accounting department offers degrees in accounting education at the undergraduate, master's and Ph.D. levels. The undergraduate and master's degree programs prepare students for careers in public and corporate accounting and in related fields including finance and law. These programs fully meet the requirement of 150-hours of college credit necessary for CPA certification. The Tippie Ph.D. program prepares students for faculty positions in higher education where they contribute to the field through scholarly research. The Tippie MBA program also offers a concentration in accounting.
