Registration Begins for Middle School Entrepreneur Camp

The University of Iowa's John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center's Jacobson Entrepreneurship Academy will be offered again this summer, providing a summer day camp for middle school students interested in starting, operating or improving a business.

Registration is now open for the academy, which will be held daily from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 16 to 20 at the John Pappajohn Business Building in Iowa City and July 23 to 27 at the Pappajohn Higher Education Center in Des Moines. These camps give students who have completed grades 7 to 9 a set of business skills that will last a lifetime.

Students spend the week developing a plan for a business they'd like to start or continue. By the end of the week, they complete a business plan, business cards, a flyer and a Power Point presentation that they present to a panel of judges who award cash prizes to the top budding entrepreneurs. During the camp, participants will:

  • Hear entrepreneurial start-up stories from nationally recognized entrepreneurs
  • Learn the nuts and bolts of starting a business from UI faculty
  • Network with other young Iowans interested in starting their own businesses
  • Compete for seed capital cash prizes awarded at the end of the week
  • Receive recognition as a top young entrepreneur in Iowa

Several past participants have actually started businesses after attending the Jacobson Entrepreneurship Academy. John DeAngelis of Fairfield has started two successful businesses: VHS2DVD, which transfers VHS tapes to DVD format; and Selling 4 You, through which DeAngelis sells other people's electronic goods on eBay and provides them with a percentage of the profit. Charles Mollenhauer of Cedar Rapids started Chucklebuk Jewelry, selling one-of-a-kind jewelry items online and in retail stores.

The academy is sponsored by the Richard O. Jacobson Foundation. Jacobson, a UI alumnus, is the founder and chairman of the board of Jacobson Companies, a leading national logistics and warehousing company based in Des Moines.

The fee for the academy is $159 per student, or $139 if the application is received by April 20. Applications received by May 4 will receive priority consideration. The fee covers costs including instruction, class materials, camp T-shirt, bus transportation for tours, snacks, lunches and the graduation reception. Transportation is available to and from Cedar Rapids for the Iowa City camp. Des Moines camp participants are responsible for their own transportation. A limited number of scholarships are available for those in need.
