President Mason announces Lopes to Serve as UI Interim Provost

Lola L. Lopes, University of Iowa emeritus professor of management and organizations, will serve as interim executive vice president and provost while a nationwide search is conducted for that position, UI President Sally Mason announced today, Tuesday, Sept. 11. Lopes is an experienced and well-regarded administrator, having served as associate provost for undergraduate education for six years prior to her retirement in 2006.

Lopes' appointment is effective immediately.

Mason also announced the co-chairs of the search committee to make a recommendation for the permanent replacement for former Executive Vice President and Provost Michael Hogan, who was named president of the University of Connecticut in August. The co-chairs will be Raul Curto, professor of mathematics and associate dean in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Michael O'Hara, professor of psychology in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Other members of the search committee will be named later.

"I am so pleased that Lola Lopes has agreed to put her well-deserved retirement on hold in order to help us be as productive as possible while searching for a new provost," Mason said. "She has the experience and the temperament to be the active partner I need in order to make certain we continue the forward momentum that is Mike Hogan's legacy. That is why she is so well respected on our campus and beyond."

"This is a wonderful opportunity to serve a university that I love," Lopes said. "I'm flattered by President Mason's expression of confidence and support, and I'm eager to rejoin my colleagues in the Provost's Office and to work again with the vice presidents, deans, and all of the faculty, staff and students who both rely on and support the Office of the Provost."

Lopes, who retired in 2006, had served from 2000-2006 as associate provost for undergraduate education. In the fall of 2005, her title was changed to include dean of the University College. As associate provost, Lopes had responsibility for admissions, student financial aid, the registrar's office, advising, evaluation and exam services, the Council on Teaching and the Center for Teaching.

She joined the UI faculty in 1990 and was the Marvin and Rose Lee Pomerantz Chair in Management and Organizations in the Henry B. Tippie College of Business. She also served as associate dean for the undergraduate program in the Tippie College from 1995-1999. Before coming to the UI, she was chair of the Psychology Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
