Financial Times Ranks UI MBA Program 49th in the World

The Financial Times of London has ranked the Tippie School of Management at the University of Iowa 49th among 100 among the top full-time MBA programs in the world.

The Financial Times published the rankings of the top 100 MBA programs Jan. 21, selecting the top schools from the 1,500 MBA programs in the world.

The Tippie School of Management rose from 57th to 49th worldwide compared to last year's ranking. It ranked 33rd among U.S. programs, 11th among programs at U.S. public universities, and fifth in the Big Ten.

The rankings of each school were determined by its performance in three broad areas: the career progression accrued from the MBA and its purchasing power in the marketplace; the diversity of its students and faculty; and its research productivity.

Gary Gaeth, associate dean of MBA programs in the Tippie School of Management, said one of the factors that contributed to the program's ranking was its placement success, with Iowa graduates advancing in their jobs and providing significant value to their employers. Ninety-eight percent of the Tippie School's Class of 2001 graduates were employed three months after graduation.

Gaeth added that the ranking also reflects well on the talented faculty at the Henry B. Tippie College of Business. "We've created an environment where students can capitalize on the synergy between quality MBA teaching and exceptionally productive faculty," he said.

Since 45 percent of last year's MBA class was international students, the Tippie School of Management also ranked well in international diversity.

"The Financial Times is influential in many areas of the world besides the U.S., including Europe, Asia and Latin America," Gaeth said. "We have worked hard to recruit some very talented students from across the world, and this ranking reinforces our status among international students who seek a high-quality MBA."

The UI rose in the rankings, even with the addition of several new, well respected MBA programs breaking into the rankings, Gaeth added.
