MBA Students To Train Iowa City High School Students for Leadership

Students in the University of Iowa's Tippie MBA program are hosting a day-long leadership seminar for students at Iowa City's two high schools on Friday, April 4.

"This is a good way for us to reach out to the community and provide a service that will help students in the Iowa City area develop their leadership skills and potential," said Anne Thimsen, one of the Tippie MBA students coordinating the Tippie Leadership Day activities. "We have attended so many outstanding leadership training seminars as M.B.A. students that we thought this would be a good way to use what we've learned and share it with others."

Tippie MBA students are working with guidance counselors at City and West high schools to select about 40 juniors and seniors with leadership potential.

"We want a group of students that will be interested and energetic and who will be able to use what they learn to strengthen their student organizations and clubs," said Thimsen.

The students will participate in a series of workshops that will help them to define a leader, assess their own personality strengths, and manage conflict. They will also learn about SMART Vision, a process that encourages people to develop goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely.

"The workshops are going to help students learn their strengths and how to use those strengths to become better leaders," Thimsen said.

The students will also take part in a presentation by Gale Mote, a Cedar Rapids-based motivational speaker and adjunct lecturer in the Tippie College of Business.

Tippie Leadership Day activities are sponsored by the Tippie Leadership Association and will be held in Room W401 of the Pappajohn Business Building from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. For more information contact Anne Thimsen at anne-thimsen@uiowa.edu or by calling 605-212-9137.
