Schmidt Wins Outstanding Mentor Award from UI Graduate College
Tippie faculty member Frank Schmidt was one of three individuals honored at a reception today for their exemplary work as mentors for graduate students.
"The Graduate College sees mentors as a crucial ingredient of education," said Graduate College Dean John Keller. "We recognize UI faculty's significant efforts to assist with all aspects of graduate scholars' research, dissertation, professional development, and job placement. These efforts demonstrate a commitment to helping graduate students succeed in school and in their careers."
The 2008 Outstanding Mentor Award will be presented to Schmidt, professor of management and organizations and Gary C. Fethke Chair in Leadership in the Tippie College of Business. The awards carry a $2,500 prize. Schmidt starts students on research early, during their first year, to promote rapid, hands-on learning.
This year's awards recognize faculty in social sciences and in mathematical and physical sciences and engineering. In alternate years the awards are presented to faculty in humanities and fine arts and in biological and life sciences.
