Civic Engagement Program Will Move to Pomerantz Career Center
Beginning July 1, the Civic Engagement Program (CEP) at The University of Iowa will be housed in and administered by the Marvin A. and Rose Lee Pomerantz Career Center as a way to incorporate volunteerism into the career development progress of UI students.
The CEP is currently housed in the Iowa Memorial Union and is jointly administered by the Office of the Provost and the vice president for student services.
"We hope that connecting the CEP to the Career Center will encourage students to think about engagement as a way to further their academic and career goals," said Beth Ingram, associate provost for undergraduate education. "The partnership with the Career Center will also allow the CEP to attain more visibility on campus."
The CEP's mission is to prepare students for community leadership and citizenship. It helps connect students, faculty members, and staff with communities, responds to community needs and opportunities, and serves as a portal to the University for community organizations seeking student involvement. CEP sponsors volunteer recruitment fairs, supports service projects, and offers consulting services to organizations to arrange appropriate opportunities for student volunteers.
"We're pleased to have the CEP join the services offered by the Pomerantz Career Center," said David Baumgartner, director of the Pomerantz Career Center. "This partnership will allow students more exposure to the benefits of service learning and volunteerism as part of career development, and allow both the center and the CEP to expand their outreach efforts in the community, state, and beyond."
CEP Director Mary Mathew Wilson said service learning, volunteerism, and career exploration are linked.
"Volunteering helps with resume building and leadership development, as well as the acquisition of soft skills, such as employability and emotional intelligence, that employers seek," Wilson said. "The Pomerantz Career Center already helps students gain these skills through their services, so including the CEP as a resource within the center is a natural fit. I look forward to joining the Career Center and am confident that the CEP will grow and thrive as a result of this move."
