UI Business Students' T-Shirt Sales to Help Refurbish NY Fire Station

Picture Kinnick Stadium filled with people all wearing a T-shirt with the New York City Fire Department emblem on the front and a picture of the Engine Co. 55's station house on the back. That's what the 100 students in Joe Sulentic's classes on entrepreneurship and new business formation at the University of Iowa Tippie College of Business are doing to have a visual image of their goal: selling 70,000 of these T-shirts as a way to raise $350,000 to refurbish a New York City fire station. The shirts will sell until the end of the semester for $10, $5 of which will go toward the cause, Sulentic said. Any shipping costs are additional. To order a Tshirt go to The classes are marketing the T-shirt to companies all over the Midwest as well as fire departments and schools. In addition, they will sell them directly to individuals via the Internet and on campus. While the students are happy to be doing their part to help some of the heroes of 9/11 for whom they have tremendous respect, they also are learning from the class. "It's been great. You can't beat a real world experience," said Ben Ratcliff, a 20-year old engineering student from Ankeny.
