Tippie Students to Compete in Bass Fishing Championship
Two College of Business students will compete in the National Guard FLW College Fishing Regional Championship from Saturday, Oct. 31 to Monday, Nov. 2 on Kentucky Lake in Murray, Ky.
Bob Downey, a junior finance and economics major, and Tyler Mehrl, a junior marketing major, are members of the UI Bass Fishing Club (www.recserv.uiowa.edu/programs/clubs/BassFishing.htm). They qualified for the regional event after finishing fifth in a National Guard FLW tournament on the Lake of the Ozarks earlier this month, and received a $1,000 donation on behalf of UI.
Downey said he is excited and confident about the upcoming challenge, but that it will be tough to fish on a lake neither he nor Mehrl have been to before.
The regional tournament will give the two a chance to win a $25,000 unrestricted donation for the UI and another $25,000 for the club. The event will be televised nationally on Versus. The top five teams in the regional championship will advance to the national championship in Knoxville, Tenn., April 10-12, 2010.
National Guard FLW College Fishing is a nationwide competitive bass-fishing program open to all full-time students at four-year colleges and universities.
