Registration Underway for Youth Entrepreneur Camp
Registration is now underway for the camp, hosted by the UI's John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center (JPEC). It provides a fun, educational experience for students in the fourth, fifth or sixth grades that want to learn what it's like to start a business.
The camp runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, July 8 to July 12 at the John Pappajohn Business Building. The students will learn about entrepreneurship through classroom and practical experience, identify the basic skills required of entrepreneurs, learn how to market a product or service, determine profit potential for a new venture, and end the week with a plan to start their own business.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for youth to explore entrepreneurship. The camp is designed to teach youth basic entrepreneurial skills and help them develop a plan for starting their own business. The students will hear from successful entrepreneurs and learn how they can turn their ideas into businesses," said JPEC director David Hensley.
The "user friendly" course materials are designed specifically for youth and contain eye-catching illustrations, examples to which young people can relate, and activities to stimulate interest in the various aspects of entrepreneurship.
Registration for the camp will continue through May 17. The cost is $79, which includes bus transportation for tours to business sites, class materials, snacks and lunches. Those registering by May 3 will save $10; tuition scholarships are available for those in need. Bus transportation to and from the camp for Cedar Rapids students will be provided.
JPEC is also offering an entrepreneurship camp for high school students from June 23 through June 28.
