An aversion to debt characterizes the entire state of Iowa, where Casey’s is based, said Charles Whiteman, an economist at The University of Iowa. “It’s very conservative, midwestern values,” he said. “When the [latest] financial crisis hit, it hit a lot harder elsewhere than here.”
