Career Leadership Academy Students Engage in Community Service Projects

Students from the Pomerantz Career Center's Career Leadership Academy will reach out to the Iowa City community over the next few weeks, engaging in service projects ranging from career guidance for teen parents to a heart health event with the American Heart Association.

The Career Leadership Academy is a four-semester academic credit program that focuses on employee readiness and leadership skill development. In the third course of the program, "The Leader Who Interacts with Others," students complete a service project of their choosing. After completing research about different needs in the community, they choose an organization with which to partner and then organize and conduct an event with that organization. These community projects are made possible by a grant from State Farm Insurance.

The following is a summary of the service projects happening over the next few weeks.

  • Hawkeye Area Community Action Program (HACAP) service learning project, 6-9 p.m. Saturday, March 26 at the Robert A. Lee Community Recreation Center. Students will host a program highlighting general nutrition guidance and pediatric care, as well as a safety seminar for parents and children. Entertainment for children will be available including live music, juggling acts, and theater performances.
  • Uptown Bill's documentary screening, 6 and 8 p.m. Sunday, March 27, W10 John Pappajohn Business Building, and book drive, Monday, March 28 to Friday, April 1. Students from the Career Leadership Academy will host a screening of the Oscar Award winning story of Bill Sackter, familiarizing them with Uptown Bill's and its affiliates. At the movie showing, viewers will learn about opportunities to become involved with the Extend the Dream Foundation and Uptown Bill's. The textbook drive will take place immediately after the movie and will be organized in collaboration with various student organizations, sororities, fraternities, and University groups. All sales from book donations will go toward Bill's Book Mark.
  • Teen parent program event with United Action for Youth, 4–6 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, Unitarian Universalist Society, 10 S. Gilbert St. This educational program for teen parents includes job-search and interview skill building, and one-on-one consultation with Career Leadership Academy students to answer job-related questions. The event also includes a free dinner, music, and family interaction for teen parents from Johnson County. Games and child care will be available. Students are coordinating this program with United Action for Youth and Sheltered Reality.
  • "Don't Fool Your Heart," 9-11 p.m. Friday, April 1, Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. Students working with the American Heart Association will host an event to raise awareness about heart health within the college community. The event will feature informational booths, heart-healthy activities, heart-healthy food, and a disc jockey to play heart-pumping music. The first 50 people in the door will receive a free T-shirt. Community partners are the American Heart Association, Late Hour, Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, Health Iowa, and Greek Life.
  • Clothing donation drive and clothing handout, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 7, 355 Iowa Ave., United Action for Youth Center. Students will conduct a clothing drive prior to this date. On April 7, youth with financial need ages 12 to 18 will be able to select donated clothing of their choice.
