UI Alumna Hansen Is Profiled
You Should Get to Know: Mattia Hansen
Business description: Altoona Campus is a not-for-profit organization that serves as Altoona’s fitness and wellness center. As the membership and marketing director, I oversee all of the customer service operations along with our membership department and sales. I am also responsible for the marketing and communication aspects of the facility. I coordinate campus events and all member communications.
Background: After four years at the University of Iowa, I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in communications and a certificate in entrepreneurship. I have been a lifelong member of Altoona, which includes graduating from Southeast Polk. Following college graduation, I returned to Altoona and accepted a full-time position with Altoona Campus as the assistant to the membership coordinator. Two years later, I was promoted to membership and marketing director.
Why I do what I do: I love all of the aspects of my job—my marketing duties allow me to use my creativity, communication, and event planning skills.
What I do to get away from work: I enjoy spending my vacation days at our cabin home on Long Lake in northern Minnesota. I love entertaining.
How I give back to the community: Giving back and being involved in the community is very important to me. For the past two years, I served as the chair for the Southeast Polk Relay For Life. I serve as secretary for Altoona Palooza, and am a part of the original core committee that started this annual community event in 2010. I am a board member for the Altoona Chamber of Commerce.
Words to live by: “Well behaved women rarely make history.” I love this quote by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich; to me it represents a powerful message about women and their presence in the work place and world. Stand up for what you believe is true and right, don’t only be seen but be heard.
The best place in central Iowa to entertain clients or colleagues: Altoona is the entertainment capital of Iowa. Prairie Meadows offers a variety of entertainment. It is always fun in the summer to watch a horse race. The Altoona Chamber keeps this town busy with events all year long, and Fireside Bar and Grill is a great place to stop for a drink and hear some live entertainment.
What Iowa can do to attract more people like me: Iowa, especially Des Moines, is a great place for young professionals. There are many opportunities for career growth, but it has to be more than just about the job. People are looking for more; they want to live in a place that offers recreational opportunities and exciting nightlife and promotes healthy lifestyles.
My mentor: My mother has shared a tremendous amount of her wisdom with me. She has been an educator and administrator for more than 30 years in the Des Moines and Johnston community school districts.
My leadership philosophy: Empower people. We need to recognize that everyone has value and appreciate all work and the talents people bring to an organization.
What I would do if I could do something else: I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit, so owning my own business would be ideal. I love the marketing and communications world, so I could easily see myself as a consultant for other businesses. I also have a passion for fashion; owning my own boutique would be a dream.
