Small Business Development Center Sponsors Business Tax Seminars

New business owners and the owners of small businesses have an opportunity to learn about taxes at a series of seminars being held during September and October. The University of Iowa Small Business Development Center has arranged the series featuring Don Burr from the Iowa Department of Revenue.

The following seminars will be offered:

"Sales, Use and Local Option Taxes" is 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 9 in Room S401, the Tenneco Colloquium of the John Pappajohn Business Building (PBB). The fee is $25. Participants will learn the difference between sales taxes and use taxes. The discussion will cover the different types of tax permits issued in Iowa, which items are taxable and which are exempt, who pays tax and collects taxes, and how to complete tax forms.

"Construction Contractors" will be presented from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 16 in Room S401 PBB, the Tenneco Colloquium. This seminar is designed exclusively for construction or construction-related businesses. The seminar will cover paying and collecting sales taxes, making exempt purchases, and working for non-profit and government organizations.

"Lawn Care and Landscapers" is from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 23 in Room S401 PBB, the Tenneco Colloquium. The fee is $25. In this seminar, owners of lawn care and landscaping businesses will learn when and when not to pay sales tax on materials, how to purchase for resale, and how to report and remit taxes. The seminar also covers proper billing procedures.

"A Small Business Tax Series" will run 6 to 7:30 p.m. on four consecutive Mondays, Oct. 7, 14, 21, and 28 in Room S401 PBB, the Tenneco Colloquium. The fee is $25 each or all four for $75. In addition to examining sales, use, payroll, employment and local option taxes, the series covers business expenses and deductions and the reporting of sole proprietor income.
