UI hosts entrepreneur camp for Iowa high school students
The camp runs 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily at the John Pappajohn Business Building and is open statewide to students who have completed ninth through 11th grades. There is no fee for the camp, during which students will have an advanced opportunity to learn about entrepreneurship, technology, and e-commerce. They will be introduced to entrepreneurs and business leaders and learn what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur.
Students will take their entrepreneurial ideas and put them into action by developing an on-line business plan to start their own business. A sampling of ideas from last summer's camp included a "For Sale By Owner" real estate web site (www.fsboiowacity.com), a go-kart track, and a goat's milk soap shop.
"It's a chance for students to come to the university, network with students with similar interests, and learn about entrepreneurship hands on. Students leave the camp fully equipped to get their businesses off the ground. They learn skills that will be relevant for a lifetime," said Dawn Bowlus, JPEC youth entrepreneurship coordinator.
Graduates receive seed capital to be used for starting their business or for future college tuition. In addition, students will be eligible to compete in business plan competitions, and successful operational businesses will be highlighted on the Iowa Youth Entrepreneurship website.
JPEC began the camp last year for Eastern Iowa students. This year, the camp has expanded statewide. Applications for the camp are available from JPEC and on its website. All applications are due May 1, but those received by April 2 will receive priority. Housing in UI dormitories will be provided, but students must provide their own transportation to and from the camp. Enrollment is limited to 32 students statewide.
The John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center at the UI and the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) sponsor BizCamp through a grant from the William Zimmerman Foundation of Fairfield, Iowa.
JPEC is also sponsoring a Youth Entrepreneur Camp for Eastern Iowa students that have completed fourth through sixth grades June 25 to June 29. For more information, contact Bowlus at (319) 335-0985 or email email@example.com.
