Registration is under way for Youth Entrepreneur Camp

Before setting up a lemonade stand or mowing lawns this summer, Eastern Iowa kids can learn what it's really like to start a business at the University of Iowa's Youth Entrepreneur Camp.

Registration is now under way for the camp hosted by the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center (JPEC) at the UI. It provides a fun, educational experience for students in fourth, fifth or sixth grades who want to learn what it's like to start a business.

The camp is from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, June 25-29 at the John Pappajohn Business Building.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for youth to explore entrepreneurship. The camp is designed to teach youth the basic entrepreneurial skills and to help them develop a plan for starting their own business. The students will hear from successful entrepreneurs and learn how they can turn their ideas into businesses," said JPEC director David Hensley.

The "user friendly" course materials are designed specifically for youth and have eye-catching illustrations, contain examples to which young people can relate, and include activities to stimulate interest in the various aspects of entrepreneurship.

During past camps, young entrepreneurs have identified many different business ideas. For example, one student invented a combination soap/shampoo bar made primarily from soybean oil. Other ideas have included web site development for individuals and small businesses, custom-made fishing lures, woodworking kits for home assembly, and a youth employment agency. "Students interested in pursuing their dreams are encouraged to apply, " Hensley said.

Registration for the camp continues through May 12. Cost is $79, which includes bus transportation for tours to business sites, class materials, snacks and lunches. Those registering by May 5 will save $10; tuition scholarships are available for those in need. Bus transportation to and from the camp for Cedar Rapids students will be provided.

JPEC is also offering a entrepreneurship camp for high school students July 15-20. To obtain registration materials or for more information for the camps, contact Dawn Bowlus at the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center at (319) 335-0985 or email dawn-bowlus@uiowa.edu.
