Tippie MBA Program Offers Career Services for Alumni

The Tippie School of Management at the University of Iowa has started a career services program for MBA alumni to help them in their career progression.

Kathie Decker, director of MBA Career Services at the Tippie School, says that the service was created not only to serve MBA alumni who have been laid off as result of the downturn in the economy, but also to assist alumni as they experience more frequent job changes than in the past.

The program uses several Web-based job search resources along with the services of a professional search firm -- Lee, Hecht, and Harrison -- to personalize the experience.

"There's always been a need for this service, but with the Internet we are able to deliver significant resources to alumni over a wide geographical area," Decker said. She added that the search firm has numerous offices throughout the country, so Tippie MBA alumni can also get personalized face-to-face assistance.

The MBA Career Services staff helps MBA alumni job seekers by offering resume tune-ups, interview coaching and job search advice. It provides access to ExecuPlanet, Career Search, and Vault Web sites, which provide company research, contacts, and career advice. MBA Career Services has an intranet site where MBA alumni can get information about recruiting events, campus interviews, company contacts, and networking opportunities.

MBA alumni can apply for jobs and post resumes through eRecruiting, a Web-based recruiting site used by MBA Career Services to link with firms seeking new employees. They can also tap into a network of more than 1,000 Tippie MBA alumni and company contacts, participate in on-campus interviews, and receive information about current job vacancies and events.

One alumna who has used Alumni Career Services is Victoria Struzynski-Olson, who graduated with a UI MBA in 1999. The North Liberty resident, who was recently laid off from a local biotech firm after almost 2 1/2 years of employment as a manager of international programs, is seeking a position where she can draw on her background in biotech, marketing and international sales. The MBA Career Services staff reviewed her resume and posted it on the eRecruiting Web site. She has also used the company research resources and has had opportunities to network with other Tippie MBA alumni.

"I've maintained ties with the MBA program and had previous knowledge of MBA Career Services from when I was a student. I was impressed with the people there and the service they provided," Struzynski-Olson added.

There is a $75 yearly registration fee for alumni to utilize MBA Career Services. This fee includes two hours of individualized job search counseling and use of all the job search resources. To register, call MBA Career Services at 1 (800) MBA-IOWA, ext. 1021 or email mba-career-services@uiowa.edu.
