UI Offers Entrepreneurship Training for High School Teachers

Iowa high school teachers interested in incorporating entrepreneurship education into their classroom curriculum can attend workshops this summer sponsored by The University of Iowa's John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center (JPEC).

JPEC will be working with the Iowa Area Education Agencies to offer several seminars over the summer. The Seminar in Entrepreneurship will be offered twice (June 10-11 and 12-13); while the Statewide Entrepreneurship Conference will be held August 11 and the Entrepreneurial Finance Seminar will be held August 12.

Participants are eligible to earn licensure renewal credit through the Area Education Agency for attending the two-day seminar or both of the August events.

Participants in the Seminar in Entrepreneurship seminars learn strategies and methods for integrating entrepreneurship into the classroom. In addition, participants receive free access to a customized online entrepreneurship curriculum, which JPEC developed through support from The Coleman Foundation of Chicago.

"The UI program is open to all Iowa high school teachers interested in, or currently teaching entrepreneurship. One of the best things about this program is its adaptability," said Dawn Bowlus, JPEC's student activities and outreach coordinator. "This program is being taught in various classes ranging from business and retail sales to economics, agriculture, and entrepreneurship."

Since the program's inception in August 2000, 168 Iowa teachers have received training and more than 2,500 students have been impacted through these in-school programs. The Zimmerman Foundation of Fairfield, Iowa, has supported the program, which has been developed by JPEC in partnership with the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE).

Participants in the Seminar in Entrepreneurship seminars can earn UI graduate credit for an additional $280. The cost for licensure renewal credit has been included in the $60 registration fee. The deadline for registration is one week prior to the start date of the workshop; space is limited to 50 participants at each training location.

In addition, the Statewide Entrepreneurship Conference will be held Aug. 11, 2003 at the Holiday Inn on Fleur in Des Moines. Attendees will hear from successful entrepreneurs and business leaders, learn from educators incorporating entrepreneurship into their classroom course work and tour a customized web-based entrepreneurship curriculum. The cost for this one-day conference is $55.

An Entrepreneurial Finance Seminar is set for Aug. 12 at the Ola Babcock Miller Building at the Capital Complex in Des Moines. This training session is a follow-up to the June Seminar in Entrepreneurship workshop. Participants will have the opportunity to gain deeper knowledge of finance and the essential role it plays in operating a successful business. This training is limited to teachers who have already participated in the Seminar in Entrepreneurship training. The cost for this one-day seminar is $40. Participants who attend both the Statewide Entrepreneurship Conference and the Entrepreneurial Finance Seminar can also earn graduate credit.
