UI Tippie School of Management ranked 31st in research productivity

The University of Iowa Henry B. Tippie School of Management has been ranked 31st among 100 MBA programs in a study based on research productivity among business faculty.

The rankings, which are based on a study of more than 700 accredited business programs nationwide, will appear in the December issue of the Academy of Management Journal. The schools are ranked according to the number of pages that faculty members published in 20 leading academic journals in 13 business school disciplines between 1986 and 1998.

"We are pleased to be ranked in the upper third of this business school ranking. Our faculty produce quality research which in turn benefits the learning potential of our students," said Gary Gaeth, associate dean of MBA programs in the Tippie School of Management.

The primary authors, Alan R. Dennis, a professor of business at Indiana University at Bloomington and James S. Trieschmann, associate dean for faculty and research at the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia did the study to contrast business-school rankings in Business Week and U.S. News & World Report, which primarily measure success in teaching and job placement.

The study also looked at research productivity in specific disciplines. Among the top 50 departments, the UI's accounting department is ninth, finance department 22nd and marketing 34th. Finance and marketing are two key disciplines that are part of a prominent MBA program, Gaeth added.

Overall, the study showed that research performance (pages published in leading journals) and MBA program performance (from the popular press) are different. The greater number of faculty, the proportion of full professors, the proportion of assistant professors, and academic journal editorships improved research performance. The budget per faculty member, and the proportion of full professors improved MBA program performance. The results are available on the University of Georgia's Web site, at http://www.terry.uga.edu/~adennis/rankings.
