Corporate Governance Expert To Speak at RSM McGladrey Institute Event

Click here to view the event live via the web at 6 pm, Nov. 10 Mary M. Sjoquist, special counsel to the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB), will be the featured speaker on November 10 at the fourth annual Speakers Series event, sponsored by the RSM McGladrey Institute of Accounting Education and Research at the University of Iowa. The event will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Auditorium (Room W10) of the John Pappajohn Business Administration Building on the University of Iowa campus in Iowa City.

Sjoquist worked directly with PCAOB board members and senior staff to formulate the rules required by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 and other policies affecting public accounting. She will describe how corporate governance practices in public companies are changing in the wake of recent scandals at Enron, Tyco, WorldCom and elsewhere. She will also discuss the PCAOB's role in restoring integrity to the financial reporting system.

Joining Sjoquist will be Leroy Dennis, executive partner of McGladrey & Pullen's National Office of Audit & Accounting. He will discuss changes in corporate governance practices at private companies.

"From a historical perspective, Sarbanes-Oxley is one of the most sweeping changes to impact corporate governance, public accounting and financial reporting since the 1930s," said Bruce Johnson, University of Iowa accounting professor and director of the RSM McGladrey Institute. "Company executives and the accounting industry are still learning how the new rules will effect them and what changes the rules will necessitate within their organizations."

"This is a great opportunity for Iowa businesses to learn more about Sarbanes-Oxley from Mary Sjoquist, an individual closely involved in developing the rules that have had such a significant impact on American business and the accounting industry," added Dean Price, managing director of RSM McGladrey's Iowa City office and an RSM McGladrey Institute board member. "We are again pleased to be able to sponsor this educational forum for students and the business community."

The RSM McGladrey Institute was founded in 1984 with contributions from McGladrey & Pullen partners who are University of Iowa accounting graduates. The Institute sponsors accounting research, hosts annual public forums on contemporary accounting and auditing issues, provides undergraduate and graduate students access to professional research and educational materials, and is a resource for the media on accounting, auditing and stock market matters.
