UI Sponsors Consider Iowa Road Trip during Spring Break
The one-credit experiential class involves an overnight trip to three organizations in Iowa March 15 and 16. Students will visit Kemin Industries, a nutritional ingredient manufacturer in Des Moines; the Science Center of Iowa, an interactive and learning center in Des Moines; and Trans Ova Genetics, an agricultural biotechnology firm in Sioux Center.
The goals of this course are to expose students to employment opportunities within the state of Iowa, prepare appropriately for site visits and organize observations and reactions into a self-reflective paper. Students will tour the facilities and speak with company representatives about career opportunities.
"I'm very excited about using spring break for this sort of experiential learning. We hope that this will be a win-win-win proposition--for the students who participate, for the companies that they visit and for the future economic development of the state," said Lola Lopes, associate provost for undergraduate education."
The Provost's Office has supported the launch of the "Consider Iowa" series with a biotechnology theme this year (a discussion forum, an experiential class and an internship program) through the UI Office of Corporate Partnerships and the Career Center.
"Consider Iowa is designed to facilitate and foster more direct interactions among UI students and smaller emerging companies in Iowa," said Usha Balakrishnan, director, Office of Corporate Partnerships, who serves on the boards of the Iowa Department of Economic Development and the Iowa Biotechnology Association.
UI students will get a glimpse of the possibilities that exist in their areas of study while also receiving the advantage of interacting with professionals in those fields. Companies will have the opportunity to learn more about university resources and programs as well as products and services offered by other Iowa businesses.
Students will attend a brief meeting prior to the trip at which details and assignments will be announced. There will be a cost to each participant of approximately $60 for overnight accommodations and food. A four- to five-page paper will be due one week following the conclusion of the trip.
The deadline to register for the trip is March 1. Students interested in details or meeting times should contact Jane Schildroth at the UI Career Center at 335-1023.
