JPEC Announces New Entrepreneur Camp for Middle School Students
Held from June 27 to July 1, this camp will offer 32 students from across Iowa a chance to learn how to start and operate their own businesses. Camp participants will learn about entrepreneurship during the day in the Pappajohn Business Building, participate each evening in organized activities and stay overnight in the residence halls during the four-day camp. They will write their own business plans using BizTech, an online entrepreneurial learning program developed by the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship. Throughout the week, campers will hear from real entrepreneurs, tour local start-up companies and get hands-on instruction from UI entrepreneurship faculty. At the end of the week, campers will leave equipped with skills to identify business opportunities and start their own businesses.
Richard (Dick) Jacobson is the founder and chairman of the board of Jacobson Companies, a leading national logistics and warehousing company based in Des Moines, Iowa. Jacobson displayed his entrepreneurial abilities at a young age in his hometown of Belmond, Iowa, where he started earning money by doing odd jobs in the community. A University of Iowa alumnus, Jacobson founded the Jacobson Warehouse Company, and developed it into a multi-faceted endeavor that now includes warehousing, trucking, packaging, logistics and industrial services companies. Jacobson Companies has 2,000 plus employees in 37 cities in 19 states.
The fee for the camp is $120 per student, which covers costs including lodging, meals, instruction, class materials, camp t-shirt, bus transportation for tours, and the graduation reception. Camp participants are responsible for providing transportation to and from Iowa City. Several full scholarships are available to those in need. Registration continues through May 7; applications received by April 23 will receive $20 off the normal fee. Registration materials are available at www.iowajpec.org.
