Tippie College Commencement Ceremonies Set for May 14-15

In case you can't attend any of the various business-related commencement ceremonies this week, the Tippie College of Business is providing several opportunities for people to witness the pomp and circumstance of the event.

Each of the graduation ceremonies will be simulcast live on the Web and archived copies of the Webcasts will be available for later viewing. In addition, the ceremonies will be broadcast on UITV.

The Henry B. Tippie School of Management commencement ceremony will be held Friday, May 14, at 10 a.m., while the Tippie College of Business undergraduate commencement ceremony will be held Saturday, May 15, at 9 a.m. Links to the archived Webcasts will added shortly after each ceremony ends.

The Tippie School of Management's commencement will be held at Hancher Auditorium, with Lola Lopes, UI associate provost for Undergraduate Education, conferring 186 degrees to the Spring 2004 graduates. James Hoffman, president of Alliant Energy, will give the keynote address. Hoffman received his BBA in finance and accounting in 1975 from the Tippie College.

The Tippie College's undergraduate commencement exercises will also be held at Hancher Auditorium. Pat Cain, interim provost at the UI, will confer 514 degrees. The keynote address will be given by Matt Whitaker, United States attorney for the Southern District of Iowa.

Whitaker received his undergraduate degree in communication studies from the UI in 1991. In 1995, he received an MBA from the Tippie School of Management and graduated with distinction from The University of Iowa College of Law. While at Iowa, Matt was an academic all-American football player for the Hawkeyes, playing in 35 consecutive games.

The student speaker will be Ambika Srinivas, who is graduating with a degree in accounting. She graduated from Valley High School in West Des Moines, but her family now lives in Bombay, India. During her time at The University of Iowa, she served as the president for the accounting organization, Beta Alpha Psi, the vice president of chapter operations for the business fraternity Delta Sigma Pi, and as a business student ambassador.

In addition, two Tippie PhD students will be receiving their doctorate degrees at the Graduate College ceremonies on Friday, May 14, at 2 p.m. Both Gonul Colak and Zhe "Joe" Zhang will receive their PhDs in Finance and will be hooded by Finance Associate Professor David Bates. UITV will broadcast each of the commencement ceremonies throughout the following week. The Tippie School of Management ceremonies will be rebroadcast Friday, May 14, at 5:00 p.m. and Wednesday, May 19, at 8:00 p.m. The Undergraduate Commencement will be rebroadcast on Monday, May 17, at 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday, May 18, at 5:00 p.m. The Graduate College commencement will be rebroadcast Friday, May 14, at 8:00 p.m. and Thursday, May 20, at 8:00 p.m.
