UI Alumni Association names officers, board members

The University of Iowa Alumni Association has named the 2000-01 officers for its board of directors, and six members have been elected to a second three-year term on the board.

The 29-member board oversees the programs and activities of the UI Alumni Association, which works to keep its 52,000 members in touch with the UI and each other.

The new chair of the board is L.D. McMullen of Des Moines, CEO and general manager of the Des Moines Water Works. He earned a bachelor of science in chemical engineering from the UI in 1968, as well as a master of science in 1972 and a Ph.D. in 1975 from the UI. He succeeds Amy O'Deen as chair.

Thomas Gelman of Iowa City is chair-elect of the board. A partner in the law firm of Phelan, Tucker, Mullen, Bright and Walker, he graduated from the UI in 1978 with a law degree.

O'Deen of Swisher is past chair of the board. O'Deen received a bachelor of science in nursing from the UI in 1980 and master's degree from the UI in 1983. She is senior assistant director of University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) and administrator of Children's Hospital of Iowa.

Six current members of the board have been elected to a second three-year term:

-- David Beckman of Burlington, representing the College of Law on the board. He serves as vice-president of the Iowa State Bar Association and is co-chair of the technology team on the Iowa Supreme Courts Commission on planning for the 21st century. He earned a law degree and an MBA from the UI in 1976.

-- Eva Dahl of Onalaska, Wis., an adjunct professor in the department of oral pathology and a member of the Iowa Dental Alumni Association board of directors, will represent the College of Dentistry on the association board. Dahl received a bachelor's degree in 1973, master's degrees in 1979 and 1982, and graduated from the College of Dentistry in 1976, all at the UI.

-- William Hise of Bonita Springs, Fla., who recently retired as assistant secretary and counsel for the Dayton Hudson Corp., Minneapolis, Minn., is a board member at-large. He received a bachelor's degree from the UI in 1958.

-- Pete Jeffries of Arlington, Va., director of communications office for Congressman Dennis Hastert, is a board member at-large. He was instrumental in organizing the Capitol Area Iowa Club and served as its president for three years. In his spare time, Jeffries serves as the UI representative to the Big Ten Council in Washington, D.C. He received his bachelor of science degree from the UI in 1986.

-- Katherine "KAP" Linder of Manson, a clinic pharmacist at the Stewart Memorial Hospital in Lake City, represents the College of Pharmacy. She is a founding member of the College of Pharmacy Alumni Board and a member of the College of Pharmacy Foundation Board. Linder graduated from the UI in 1981.

-- Dr. Molly Moreland of Iowa City, a practicing dentist in Iowa City, is serving a dual position with service on the board and on the Board in Control of Athletics. She received a bachelor's degree from the UI in 1987 and graduated from the College of Dentistry in 1991.
