UI Research Foundation appoints Weis as licensing associate

John Weis has been named to the staff of the University of Iowa Research Foundation (UIRF) as a licensing associate who will help manage intellectual property created by UI faculty and staff.

Weis will work with current UIRF staff to gather and evaluate inventions and disclosures from University researchers, and then work with off-campus attorneys to coordinate the filing of patent applications on selected inventions. Additionally, he will negotiate agreements with corporate partners interested in making commercial use of UI inventions.

Weis' appointment was effective Aug. 1.

"I look forward to contributing to the UIRF and its growing technology transfer operation. And it is especially nice to be back at my alma mater," said Weis.

The position was added to keep pace with the increasing number of patents and patent applications generated from UI research.

"We've had a significant increase in activity in the last few years. We're getting more patents, and we're entering more license agreements that will encourage commercial use of the inventions. We're delighted that John has chosen to join us. His background and experience will help us continue to grow," said BruceWheaton, UIRF executive director.

Before joining the UIRF, Weis was product manager at NewMonics, Inc., a Java software startup company in Ames, Iowa. He also worked as a technology transfer associate at Iowa State University, and at AT&T in the network engineer and software implementation areas. He has a bachelor of science in engineering from the UI and a master of engineering management degree from Northwestern University.

Weis, a native of Decorah, Iowa is a Major in the U.S. Army Reserve 372nd Engineer Group in Des Moines, with over 15 years of service in the Corps of Engineers, including serving in the Persian Gulf War.

The UIRF is a nonprofit corporation established in 1975 to manage intellectual property arising from UI research.
