Nonprofit Tax Expert To Speak Oct. 13

Bruce R. Hopkins, a leading authority on tax-exempt organizations, will present "Legal, Tax, and Governance Challenges Facing Nonprofit Organizations," on Oct. 13 at the University of Iowa's Tippie College of Business as part of the RSM McGladrey Institute Speakers Series.

This free program is from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Auditorium (Room W10) of the John Pappajohn Business Building at the corner of Clinton and Jefferson Streets on the UI campus. The event is sponsored by the University of Iowa RSM McGladrey Institute of Accounting Education and Research.

"Legislation designed to clean up the business practices in the private sector has trickled down into the public sector, and the IRS and Congress are now paying close attention to business activities in the nonprofit community," says Connie Benning, RSM McGladrey marketing director. Hopkins will provide an inside track on issues that mean the most to tax-exempt organizations, including taxation issues and value creating boards.

Hopkins is a lawyer with the firm Polsinelli, White, Vardeman, and Shalton, Kansas City, Mo. He is also the author of 13 books, including "The Legal Answer Book for Nonprofit Organizations," "The Law of Tax-Exempt Organizations," and "The Tax Law of Charitable Giving," as well as the newsletter The Nonprofit Counsel.

The RSM McGladrey Institute was founded in 1984 with contributions from McGladrey & Pullen partners who are UI graduates. The Institute helps fund accounting industry research and provides educational enrichment experiences, such as its Speaker Series, for students and the business community. McGladrey & Pullen is the largest employer of CPAs in the state and has 35 active partners who are University of Iowa graduates.
