Amy Colbert was once a Tippie student and today she's a Tippie faculty member. She reflects on her choice to study here.

"One of the reasons I chose to come to Tippie as a doctoral student was because of what I like to call the 'Midwest feel' you get here," said Colbert. "I felt very connected with several faculty members, some of whom are still here and who I continue to work with today. I also came into the program with a really good cohort of other students who started the same time I did. They were a great support system and another reason Tippie felt like a good fit for me."

When Amy began the doctoral program, she immediately began working on research projects with several faculty members.

"From the very beginning, I wasn't just taking classes," said Colbert. "I was also working on research projects, so I was able to immediately apply what I was learning in classes. I could see how everything that I learned was helping me become a researcher—and that was wonderful."

Today she strikes a balance between research and teaching as assistant professor in the Department of Management and Organizations in the Tippie College of Business. The majority of her research has explored the subject of leadership, and today she continues to explore the dyadic processes by which a leader impacts a follower at work and especially how multiple layers of leadership impact day-to-day experiences in the workplace.

"I have broadened out a little bit, but I find that leadership is always going to be something that pulls my research together."

"What I love best about my job is the ability to craft," said Colbert. "I was an undergraduate accounting and math major so I enjoy the statistical research part of my work, and I spend a lot of time on the job writing, an area I like too. Being in the classroom with students is another completely different aspect of the job that I enjoy. I get to craft those areas into what I want to do—for the next semester, for the next five years, or for the time of a career. This is a wonderful opportunity."
