Important Information Regarding Windows Updates

STSG has policies regarding the virus protection and security environment on graduate student office computers.

These include the following:

  • The Windows Automatic Update Service will check for updates at 11 a.m. each day. If the computer is not turned on at that time, the service will initiate a scan for updates 5 minutes after the machine has been started. If updates are present, they will be downloaded and scheduled for installation the following day at 11 a.m. Once installed, the machine will automatically reboot (if required) while no users are logged in. If a user is logged in when the installation is complete, he/she will be notified that to complete the installation, a reboot will be required. The only option is to reboot (Click "Yes"), to ensure that you have saved any files or data you are working on. You will not be given the chance to save files once you have clicked the "Yes" button. Please be sure to complete this reboot. Your computer will not be protected until the reboot occurs.
  • Norton Antivirus will automatically check for new virus definition files each day within one hour of 9 a.m. Most definition updates will not require a reboot to complete.
  • Norton Antivirus is set to scan incoming files automatically

STSG encourages students to manually scan the System (C:) and Data (D:) drives occasionally to prevent possible infection and data loss.
