Your path to Tippie starts here

Current University of Iowa and high school students admitted to the University are encouraged to consider the Tippie College of Business. Here you can explore the world of business, diversify your skills with a second major, or prepare for more than one career.

Our advisors will help you decide on your major, plan for future semesters, fill you in on Tippie RISE requirements, and find community through student organizations. We'll also guide you through any challenges or roadblocks that may affect your admission.

Requirements for Admission to Tippie

University of Iowa students looking to gain admission to Tippie need to meet these criteria to be considered for standard admission to Tippie. 

  • 24 semester hours of college credit (from UI or transfer credit)
  • No instances of academic misconduct
  • A GPA of at least 2.75 prerequisite, UI, and cumulative (accounting requires a 3.0 UI and cumulative GPA)
  • Passing grades (including grades of P if earned spring 2020) in the following prerequisites or equivalents:
    • ECON:1100 Principles of Microeconomics
    • STAT:1030 Statistics for Business
    • RHET:1030 Rhetoric
    • BAIS:1500 Business Computing Essentials
    • MATH:1350 Quantitative Reasoning for Business
  • Completion of our Pre-Admission Requirement (PAR) in the semester by the end of the semester in which you apply.

How to apply

Most University of Iowa students interested in business apply to Tippie around the start of their second year.

After the deadline, you'll first be auto-enrolled in a Pre-Admission Requirement (PAR) where you'll complete a series of virtual onboarding modules about Tippie, our academic requirements, and advising expectations. Applicants who do both will have their applications evaluated after the semester ends.

You need to meet the admissions requirements by the end of the semester in which you apply. If you have requirements left to meet in summer, you’ll need to apply to Tippie for spring semester of the following year.

Fall admissions

Step 1: Check that you have met or are in progress with all requirements required for admission. 

Step 2: Apply before March 1 by filling out the Change of College Application. 

  • Applications can be submitted until midnight on the day of the deadline, but we recommend you apply well before that so we can assist you with questions or problems.

Step 3: After the application deadline, March 1, you’ll be auto-enrolled in an ICON site for our Pre-Admission Requirement (PAR).

Step 4: Official transcripts from other institutions must be in the Office of Admissions by June 15 for fall applicants.

Step 5: Keep an eye out for a decision in June.

Spring admissions

Step 1: Check that you have met or are in progress with all requirements required for admission. 

Step 2: Apply before October 1 by filling out the Change of College Application.

  • Applications can be submitted until midnight on the day of the deadline, but we recommend you apply well before that so we can assist you with questions or problems.

Step 3: After the application deadline, October 1, you’ll be auto-enrolled in an ICON site for our Pre-Admission Requirement (PAR). 

Step 4: Official transcripts from other institutions must be in the Office of Admissions by January 10 for spring applicants.

Step 5: Keep an eye out for a decision in late December or early January.

Change of College Application

Did you miss the application deadline? Don't sweat it!

Step 1: Submit a change of college application on MyUI for the semester following your intended admission. For example, if you’re applying for Fall 2024, please choose Spring 2025 on your Change of College Application.  

Step 2: Complete our Late Admission Form, after your request is received, a member of our admissions team will contact UI admissions to move your application to your intended admission date.

What's the Pre-Admission Requirement?

As a part of your application to the Tippie College of Business, you are required to complete the Pre-Admissions Requirement (PAR). You will be led through a series of online modules to better understand BBA degree requirements, explore information about majors and involvement and learn about Tippie RISE opportunities.

Requests for special permission for BUS:3000 or major-level courses

  • BUS:3000 permission requests will be provided if you're on track for admission and have completed PAR.  
  • Major-level course permission requests are completed within PAR on a case-to-case basis by our advising team.  

Our team reviews special permissions for BUS:3000 and major-level courses every 2-3 business days. Please direct any special permission questions to our team Tippie-UPO-PAR@uiowa.edu.

Appeal an admissions decision

If you have applied and been denied admission to Tippie, you can submit an appeal to have the denial decision reviewed.

Appeals for Spring 2024 admission can be submitted starting December 20, 2023. Appeals must be received before 11:59 pm on January 4, 2024.

Declaring a major

To declare a major in Tippie, you must be admitted and have completed the following courses:

  • ECON:1100 Principles of Microeconomics
  • STAT:1030 Statistics for Business
  • RHET:1030 Rhetoric
  • BAIS:1500 Business Computing Essentials
  • MATH:1350 Quantitative Reasoning for Business
  • ECON:1200 Principles of Macroeconomics
  • ACCT:2100 Introduction to Financial Accounting
