Spring 2014 Commencement Information for Guests

The following instructions will tell you what to expect before, during, and after the commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 17 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Ordering Announcements

Traditional announcements may be purchased at the Levitt Center from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on weekdays. New and graduating senior members of the Alumni Association receive 10 free announcements—call 319-335-3294 to join.

You may also purchase personalized announcements specifically designed with the University of Iowa's school crest and customized with your student's name, degree, major, time, date, and place of the ceremony. To order personalized announcements, go to http://www.iowalum.com/merchandise/graduation.cfm.

Class rings and diploma frames can be ordered through the University Book Store.

Tickets

The ceremony is open to the public. Seats are not reserved and tickets are not required. Doors open one hour before the starting time. Each degree candidate is recognized on stage. The ceremony will last approximately 90 minutes. (If you are making restaurant reservations, be sure to allow time for traffic congestion before and after the ceremony.)

No backpacks or large bags are allowed. Officials reserve the right to inspect any bag or package brought into the building.

Driving Directions

From I-80:

  1. Take exit #242/CORALVILLE.
  2. Turn Right on 1st Avenue/Hayden Fry Way.
  3. Go south to the 2nd Street (US-6) intersection and turn Left.
  4. Turn Right on Hawkins Drive.
  5. Carver-Hawkeye Arena will be up the hill and around the curve to the left. Parking will be available in the lots to the west and south of the arena.

Parking

Parking is available in the Arena Commuter Lot (lot 75) and in the Dental Science Building Parking lot (lot 40).

Special Needs

Information for Guests with Disabilities or Limited Mobility

Guests with physical disabilities who have a Disabilities Parking Permit (plate, placard, or sticker) will be permitted to park in lot 46, adjacent to Carver Hawkeye Arena. Public Safety officers will be restricting entrance to this lot, to only those guests with these state issued permits. From lot 46, guests should enter the West doors.

Seating for guests is accessible from the upper concourse level, which is the ground level you will enter on. Guests with disabilities or limited mobility can find seating in the Feller Club Room for themselves and up to two companions. No food or beverage will be permitted in this room. This room is equipped with large television screens and commencement ceremonies can be watched from here.

Guests with disabilities are also welcome to view the ceremony from the upper concourse level. Wheelchair and scooter spaces can be found in sections K-N on the upper concourse. The ceremony can be viewed from here or on large screens that can be found in these sections. A sign language interpreter will be on-stage to interpret the ceremony.

Photos

Professional photographers from Flash Photography will be taking two photos of each candidate: a more formal, "posed" photo taken prior to being recognized onstage and a "candid" photo taken while shaking hands with a university official.

To receive a complimentary proof (with no obligation to purchase), students must complete the address information on the back of the name card, which is filled out when purchasing their cap and gown. This photo name card will be handed to the reader as your student is recognized on stage. University Book Store personnel will complete this information for mail-in orders. Students should check for accuracy.
