Events & Deadlines for First-Year Students

Orientation: Incoming first-year students participate in the university's Orientation program, and direct admission students have the opportunity to meet and interact with Tippie College of Business staff during Orientation. Orientation is an opportunity to receive general information about the college, and staff will be available to assist you in choosing classes. Convocation is the kick-off to the fall semester on Sunday, August 25 with a celebration on the lawn west of the Old Capitol. This event revives the tradition of introducing students to each other, to UI leaders, and the university. A block party at the President’s Residence follows.

Direct Admit Seminar: All direct admission students are required to take course 6B:020 during their first semester to ease the transition to college. The course enhances your ability to become actively engaged in the College of Business and broader University of Iowa communities.

Tippie Fest takes place the second week of classes and welcomes new students as well as returning students to the Tippie College of Business. Expect free food, door prizes, and entertainment. Be sure to stop by the Tippie Student Organization Fair held at the same time.

First-Year Faculty Lunches give first-year students the opportunity to have lunch with faculty members from the six major departments and the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center. Students gain information about all majors offered and connect with College of Business faculty.

Midterm Madness is a study skills workshop held near the 5th or 6th week of classes to help students prepare for midterm exams. Students learn study tips and ways to manage stress and test anxiety.

Finals Frenzy is a study-skills workshop to prepare students for final exams. Students learn study tips for comprehensive and end-of-semester tests. Other topics include healthy eating, sleep before tests, and stress and test anxiety management.
