First-Year Experience

Events & Deadlines for First-Year Students

Orientation: Incoming first-year students participate in the university's Orientation program, and direct admission students have the opportunity to meet and interact with Tippie College of Business staff during Orientation. Orientation is an opportunity to receive general information about the college, and staff will be available to assist you in choosing classes. More information regarding Orientation may be found at

Convocation is the kick-off to the fall semester on Sunday, August 25 with a celebration on the lawn west of the Old Capitol. This event revives the tradition of introducing students to each other, to UI leaders, and the university. A block party at the President’s Residence follows.

Direct Admit Seminar: All direct admission students are required to take course 6B:020 during their first semester to ease the transition to college. The course enhances your ability to become actively engaged in the College of Business and broader University of Iowa communities.

Tippie Fest takes place the second week of classes and welcomes new students as well as returning students to the Tippie College of Business. Expect free food, door prizes, and entertainment. Be sure to stop by the Tippie Student Organization Fair held at the same time.

Major Information Sessions give first-year students the opportunity to hear from faculty members from the six major departments and the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center. Each department hosts an information session along with a panel of students from their majors. Students gain information about majors, career options, relevant on-campus experiences and connect with Tippie College of Business faculty.

The Academic Success Series includes five workshops covering various topics like "Overcoming Procrastination", "Work Smart, Not Hard", and "Conducting an Effective Scholarship Search".
