A Letter from the Director
Welcome to the Vaughan Institute!
The institute's mission is exciting and ambitious—to provide innovative education and research in the fields of risk management and insurance (RMI). This mission arises from the distinguished career of the late renowned scholar, Dr. Emmett J. Vaughan. Dr. Vaughan established the highly regarded insurance education program at the University of Iowa more than four decades ago and authored the defining text, Fundamentals of Risk Management and Insurance, now in its 10th edition. His legacy lives on through generations of students who completed the insurance program at Iowa up until the late 1980s, and it will continue on through today's students who graduate with a Certificate in RMI from the institute that proudly bears his name.
An over-arching goal of the Vaughan Institute is to provide a first-rate education in a nurturing and supportive learning environment where students are able to realize their full potential. We are very grateful to our many industry friends whose steadfast enthusiasm and support are helping us reach this goal. Their leadership and generous financial gifts totaling nearly $3.5 million led to the formation of the institute, and enabled us to initiate and administer our important academic, student development, and outreach programs. With these programs solidly under way, we are progressing nicely toward achieving another goal—adding value to the industry and enhancing the economic development of the State of Iowa by educating the next generation of risk management and insurance professionals.
Partnerships will always be key to the Vaughan Institute's success. The institute itself was established by the Tippie College of Business in partnership with Iowa's vibrant and growing RMI industry. As the institute moves forward, a critical objective will be to continue building on our valued partnerships with faculty, students, and industry leaders, including the institute's Advisory Board. Their advice, counsel, and friendship will serve us well as we strive to make the Vaughan Institute the best it can be.
If you're a potential student, I invite you to stop by the offices and learn more about the certificate and our student services. For employers, I encourage you to explore our website to discover ways you can partner with the institute and contribute to the accomplishment of our important mission.
