Donna Pearcy Earns URMIA and Regents Awards
Congratulations to Donna Pearcy, adjunct instructor and The University of Iowa's chief risk officer. Last fall, Donna received the 2009 Distinguished Risk Manager award by University Risk Management and Insurance Association (URMIA). This is the highest award bestowed by URMIA. Donna also received the Board of Regents Staff Excellence Award for her work during the epic floods of 2008.
Students Overton and Duke Win RIMS Conference Scholarships
Congratulations to Amy Overton and Austin Duke for winning Anita Benedetti Scholarships to attend the national RIMS conference in Boston, April 25-29. Each year, only 30-35 students win this prestigious, all-expense paid scholarship. While at the conference, the students are assigned a risk manager as a mentor and given expert advice on the sessions they should attend. In addition, members of the Greater Quad Cities RIMS chapter help them network through this conference that draws nearly 10,000 participants.
Amy Overton Receives Spencer Foundation Scholarship
Life will be a little easier for student Amy Overton next year. She recently received word from the Spencer Education Foundation that she has been selected to receive one of the foundation's John T. Lockton Memorial scholarships.This impressive scholarship is made possible through the generosity of the Lockton Foundation. Congratulations, Amy!
Vaughan Students and Staff Featured in National RIMS Podcasts
Thanks to Hal Larson, vice president and risk manager of Muscatiine Foods, the Institute's Industry Mentoring program will soon gain national exposure in two of five mentoring podcasts being created by the national Risk and Insurance Management Society's Student Involvement Committee. Hal was a leader in the creation of both the RIMS mentoring program and the Vaughan Institute's program, which is a joint venture with the Greater Quad Cities RIMS Chapter and the student organization, Gamma Iota Sigma. Student Jon Raftis and recent graduate Tyler Probaso will speak about the mentoring process from a student's perspective in Podcast #3. Hal Larson and associate director Viana Rockel taped Podcast #2 and about the process for choosing and matching students and mentors. RIMS members will have access to all five Podcasts, but only Podcast #1 will be made available to the general public.
In another RIMS announcement, associate director Viana Rockel was recently installed as secretary for the Greater Quad Cities RIMS Chapter.
