Date: Feb. 7, 2011
Time: 5:00 p.m.
Location: W401 PBB
RSVP to Ashley Schulz. This is an extremely important event for you to attend.
The Mocktail Event is a crucial event for your growth and development here at the Tippie College of Business. All RMI students have been invited to attend, and it is a required event for students in the mentoring program. The opportunity to network with industry professionals, many of whom are recruiters and highly ranked members, in a non-intimidating environment is a rare opportunity. The connections and networks you can begin to create for yourself while still in school are very important for your career growth later on down the line. The chance to work with a Pomerantz Career Center individual to perfect your elevator speech and networking skills is something that you shouldn't pass up. I encourage each and every RMI student to try to attend this event, you won't regret it!
Feb. 9 Risk Managers Roundtable and Reception, RSVP to Viana
Date: Feb. 9, 2011
Location: W401 PBB

Spring Job and Internship FairWednesday, February 23, 2011
11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Main Lounge, Iowa Memorial Union
Last year over 120 employers and approximately 1,500 students attended this event! All Vaughan Institute corporate partners are encouraged to attend and recruit students at the Pomerantz Center Career Fair. Here are a few of the RMI employers and partners you may want to visit when you are at the Fair: : AEGON Companies, AVIVA, Cottingham & Butler, HNI Corporation, Kohler company, Liberty Mutual/Indiana Insurance, Modern Woodman of America, Nationwide Insurance, Sentry Insurance, Securian Financial, The IMT Group, United Fire Group. Please let them know you are Vaughan Students. If you want to really impress them by learning how to prepare your own business cards for the event, stop by Viana's office for information.
NAPSLO Conference March 25-26, Chicago, Deadline March 1.
This is an annual conference sponsored by the Alpha Kappa Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma. It is a great opportunity to learn about excess and surplus lines and meet professionals. It should be particularly valuable for anyone wishing to land a job in the Chicago area. NAPSLO stands for National Association of Professional Surplus Lines Offices.
For more details about GIS plans to attend, attend a Gamma Iota Sigma meeting or contact Alyssa Flamm. GIS has some funds available to help students attend this conference.
IIAI Licensing Review Class: April 1, 2, 9.
The state licensure study course sponsored by the Independent Insurance Agents of Iowa is free to all RMI certificate students. The study materials, which normally cost $85, are also provided free of charge. The course will be held all day on April 1, 2, 9 if we get enough students signed up. This is the second year we have offered this course and those who attended last year found it very valuable for anyone going into underwriting, claims or sales. The course will prepare you for the combined Iowa Personal Lines and Commercial Lines licensure test. International students aren't eligible to sit for linsangs; however, we strongly suggest other RMI students take the course. After completing the test, you will need to apply to the Iowa Insurance Division for licensure. You are responsible for the cost of the test and applying for licensure.
We need RSVP's as soon as possible to determine if we have enough interest to hold the class. Last year, one student received an immediate raise and promotion after taking the class and test. Also, it will look good on your resume and help you land a job. Many states have reciprocity agreements, which means if you take the Iowa test, you will only need to apply for licensure in another state. Contact Viana for more information and to reserve a seat in the class.
April 8 Professional Trip to Nationwide, Des Moines, IA
Details are being finalized for a professional trip to Nationwide in Des Moines. Please put this date on your calendars and watch future newsletters for more information. RIMS Golf Outing May, 19, Muscatine Iowa
The Greater Quad Cities Risk Insurance Management Chapter is planning a golf outing at the Geneva Golf and Country Club in Muscatine for May 19. Proceeds from the event will be given to the Vaughan Institute to support insurance education. This is the second year for the event, and the date was chosen to allow students to attend and network with the golfers. More information will be provided at a later date.
Ramundt Golf Outing, August 18, Finkbine Golf Course
This is a favorite activity for RMI students, and it raises money for scholarships for risk management and insurance students. Student mingle with nearly 75 highly successful industry professionals in a relaxed and fun setting. Many find connections that lead to internships and jobs. More information will be forthcoming.
